Electrical Field Engineer

Job Summary 

The Electrical Field Engineer is the primary technical resource for the electrical construction team on a major power or substation project.

You are responsible for ensuring that the electrical installation—from underground duct banks to high-voltage switchgear—complies with the engineering design, NEC codes, and project specifications. You manage the flow of technical information, create work packages for the crews, resolve design conflicts (RFIs), and oversee the quality of the installation.

Key Responsibilities

• Technical Execution & Work Planning: Create "Work Packages" or "Lift Drawings" for the electrical crews. Break down complex cable schedules into daily pull lists to ensure the foremen have the exact info they need. Manage the Cable Schedule. You must track every cable pull, ensuring the correct footage is cut, the correct cable type is used, and the routing (tray/conduit) matches the design. Perform look-aheads to verify that commodities (conduit, fittings, wire, cable tray) are on-site. If the crews run out of 2-inch flex conduit, it’s your job to have ordered it two weeks ago.

• Design Resolution: Identify design conflicts in the field. Draft and submit Requests for Information to the design engineering firm to propose solutions. Create red-line sketches to direct the crews on how to route conduit around obstacles while staying compliant with bend radius and fill ratio codes.

• Quality Control & Testing Oversight: Walk down installations prior to conduit pours (duct banks) to verify rebar grounding, conduit spacing, and hold-downs. Coordinate with the testing subcontractor to schedule Megger, Hi-Pot, and VLF testing on cables. Ensure test results are reviewed and filed immediately. Ensure installations meet NEC (NFPA 70) requirements, specifically checking support spacing, grounding bonding, and cable separation rules.

• Progress Tracking & As-Builts: Measure and report installed quantities weekly (e.g., linear feet of tray, number of terminations) to support the project's Earned Value/Progress payments. Maintain a "live" set of Red-Line drawings. Every time a conduit route changes in the field, you must mark it up to ensure the final "As-Built" drawings are accurate.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Construction Management.

Experience: 2-5 years of field experience in heavy industrial or electrical construction. Familiarity with Cable Schedules (software or Excel-based). Basic understanding of NEC codes.

Technical Skills:

• Proficiency with AutoCAD or Bluebeam Revu for markup and sketches.
• Ability to read One-Line Diagrams, Three-Lines, and Wiring Schematics.
• Strong Excel skills (for managing the massive cable lists).

• Travel: Ability to travel 75% to 100% of the time, often on short notice, to project sites globally, sometimes for extended durations.

• Strong organizational skills.  

• Valid jurisdictional driver license.  

• Ability to work holidays, weekends, and overtime.  

• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, requiring physical activity, including climbing ladders, working at elevations, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, standing, walking, and lifting 50 pounds.

• Ability to work in areas that may be noisy, cold, hot, dirty, and able to wear personal protective equipment.  

• Ability to meet appropriate physical requirements as determined by the corporate Health & Safety Department as prerequisites to perform certain tasks or training activities, for example, pulmonary function testing for respiratory protection, if required.

• Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
