Control Room Operator

Job Summary 

The Control Room Operator is responsible for the safe, environmentally sound, and efficient daily operation of the facility. This role performs assigned routine inspections and manipulative operations without close supervision and directs the daily operational activities of all shift personnel, including field equipment operators and support drivers.

The Control Room Operator is also required to follow and adhere to established Quality Standards and Procedures designed to supply reliable power to the customer. This includes ensuring all equipment transitions are handled with strict reference to time and temperature guidelines to achieve an accident and injury-free safe work environment.

Key Responsibilities

• System Operations: Places into or removes from service boiler-turbine-generator systems and related auxiliary equipment, adjusting parameters from the distributed control system either manually or automatically.

• Generator Management: Starts, stops, parallels, separates, loads, and unloads the turbine-generator unit while adjusting voltage to maintain power factor and control in-house vars.

• Operational Leadership: Monitors various plant parameters, directs shift operators to maintain systems within specified limits, and assists the Shift Supervisor with equipment lockouts and tagouts (LOTO).

• Compliance & Recording: Conducts daily inspections of continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) and control panels, keeping precise records of all equipment changes and abnormal conditions.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent and have completed standard operator training requirements or possess equivalent power plant work-related experience. The role requires an effective communicator capable of commanding respect and full cooperation from the operations team while demonstrating the ability to react quickly and with good judgment during emergencies. 

Technical Skills

The ideal candidate has a thorough knowledge of the principles of operation, function, and construction of steam boilers, the theory and chemistry of combustion, boiler water quality control, and turbine-generators. Familiarity with Distributed Control Systems, automatic voltage regulator controls, and compliance programs is highly preferred. 

Requirements

• Travel: Ability to travel 75% to 100% of the time, often on short notice, to project sites globally, sometimes for extended durations.
• Strong verbal, written, analytical and interpersonal skills.  

• Excellent customer, communication, and interpersonal skills. 

• Ability to work independently. 

• Ability to complete multiple projects within time constraints.  

• Strong organizational skills.  

• Valid jurisdictional driver license.  

• Ability to work holidays, weekends, and overtime.  

• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors, requiring physical activity, including climbing ladders, working at elevations, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, standing, walking, and lifting 50 pounds.

• Ability to work in areas that may be noisy, cold, hot, dirty, and able to wear personal protective equipment.  

• Ability to meet appropriate physical requirements as determined by the corporate Health & Safety Department as prerequisites to perform certain tasks or training activities, for example, pulmonary function testing for respiratory protection, if required.

• Must be legally eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
